misfits

1 Samuel 22:1-2 David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.

I read this scripture and started chuckling.  This is not exactly what any woman or man dreams of when they are starting a ministry, a business, a kingdom, or an army. No one brags about surrounding themselves with those who are in distress, in debt or discontented!

But David accepted them.  He was willing.  So was Jesus.  Jesus surrounded himself with sinners; prostitutes, tax collectors, fishermen.  Ordinary people.  No one was turned away that wanted to be led.  Nothing you had done was too bad, too sinful.   No one was rejected by Him.

I take comfort in that.  I’m a misfit, a sinner.  I’m not a first pick.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus wants me.  He doesn’t make it difficult and He doesn’t require me to be perfect or have it all together.  I just need to come to Him.

Maybe this is just one of the reason David was called a man after God’s own heart.  David didn’t make it difficult for people.  Just come as you are.
